Owner

M/E Engineering

Duration

1 Week

Project Overview

Westside Construction Group recently completed a complex trenching project for M/E Engineering, which involved the precise removal of concrete and hand digging to locate the sanitary sewer hub in the basement. This project required careful planning and execution due to the limited access and specific requirements of the site.

Project Details

  • Location: Rochester, NY
  • Scope of Work: Trenching for Sanitary Sewer Hub Location and Concrete Repair
  • Tools Used: Propane Core Cut Saw
  • Access: Through two elevators and a loading dock, 500 feet from the disposal location

Project Objectives

The primary objectives of this project were to:

  1. Remove Concrete and Hand Dig: Carefully remove concrete and manually dig to locate the sanitary sewer hub situated under the slab in the basement.
  2. Manage Limited Access: Navigate the confined access routes, utilizing two elevators and a loading dock to transport materials to and from the basement.
  3. Backfill and Concrete Repair: Backfill the trench with staged stone and repair the concrete with rebar and pins, preparing the area for new flooring installation in later project stages.

Challenges and Solutions

Limited Access and Material Transport

The sanitary sewer hub was located in a basement area with restricted access, only reachable via two elevators and a loading dock situated 500 feet from the disposal site.

Solution: Our team coordinated meticulously to transport equipment and materials through the limited access routes. We used a propane core cut saw during after-hours to minimize disruptions and carefully managed the logistics of spoil removal and backfill material staging in the basement.

Precise Concrete Removal and Hand Digging

Removing the concrete and digging by hand in a confined space required precision and careful handling to avoid damaging existing structures and utilities.

Solution: Our skilled crew utilized advanced techniques and tools to remove the concrete accurately and hand dig to the required depth. The use of a propane core cut saw allowed us to cut through the concrete efficiently and safely.

Backfilling and Concrete Repair

Ensuring that the trench was properly backfilled and the concrete repaired to support new flooring installation was critical to the project’s success.

Solution: We backfilled the trench with stone staged in the basement, ensuring a solid and stable base. The concrete was then repaired using rebar and pins to provide the necessary support for the new flooring installation planned for later stages of the project.

Results

  • Successful Hub Location: Successfully located the sanitary sewer hub, allowing M/E Engineering to proceed with their project.
  • Efficient Material Handling: Managed the transportation of materials efficiently despite limited access, ensuring a smooth workflow.
  • Quality Concrete Repair: Completed the backfill and concrete repair to high standards, preparing the site for subsequent flooring installation.
